Quotations

I follow a few pages that offer interesting/insightful/humorous quotes. Mr. H.K. runs a good one. Another, to which I must give the credit for the collection I'll post today, is The Quotations Page. So here's a collection of favorites I've saved up over the course of a large number of months. Some amused me. Some made me think. I hope you enjoy them.

"We need a president who's fluent in at least one language." -Buck Henry

"The two most common elements in the universe are Hydrogen and stupidity." -Harlan Ellison

"In science, 'fact' can only mean 'confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent.' I suppose that apples might start to rise tomorrow, but the possibility does not merit equal time in physics classrooms." -Stephen Jay Gould

"The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you." -Rita Mae Brown

"Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home." -Bill Cosby

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." -Galileo Galilei

"It is a curious thing... that every creed promises a paradise which will be absolutely uninhabitable for anyone of civilized taste." -Evelyn Waugh

"I've gone into hundreds of [fortune-teller's parlors], and have been told thousands of things, but nobody ever told me I was a policewoman getting ready to arrest her." -A New York City detective

"When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President. Now I'm beginning to believe it." -Clarence Darrow

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." -Thoman Jefferson

"If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?" -Abraham Lincoln

"Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men." -Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"New York now leads the world's great cities in the number of people around whom you shouldn't make a sudden move." -David Letterman
